The Modiano Market

Stoa Modiano (Modiano arcade) is a remnant of the history from those that always define future. It took its name from the Jewish architect Eli Modiano, the family of whom financed its construction. The Modianos are one of the most known families of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki that took action and created the last century in Thessaloniki, leaving a unique cultural and architectural heritage. They lost 60 family members in the Holocaust. A walk in the narrow alleys of the food market with the fresh products is a must for every visitor.

Members of Modiano family reach today 3.400 who live in more than 17 countries in the world. During German occupation Jacques Modiano’s family, from Thessaloniki, had been rescued, whereas 60 members in total perished in the Holocaust. The Modianos around the world meet every two years in a city where their ancestors had lived.
