Moni Lazariston in Stavroupoli was built in 1886 by monks of Saint Paul Vincent battalion, who became famous as Lazarists from their headquarters in the church of Saint-Lazare in Paris.
Moni Lazariston is one of the diamonds of Thessaloniki that have survived, facing too many problems in the course of time. It has been highly exploited, but it was an expensive intervention. This expensive intervention is one, maybe the most brilliant remnant of the Cultural Capital of Europe “Thessaloniki 1997”. It has been restored and given to the society of Stavroupoli as a piece of its history. With great respect to the historical aspect it is today a model of evaluation of the historical heritage intended for contemporary cultural use. Some say that they try to hear at its stares the sound of the monks’ sandals walking around. It may be the sound of the course of centuries.
